No, I've never heard an audible sound. My petrol light has come on at 50 miles like you describe, with the actual petrol light and also a round orange light on the left, then at 20 miles (oops I was rather naughty) the orange round light comes back on for a few seconds and '20 miles' comes up on the screen, then just the normal petrol light remains on. No sound.

You have to activate all chimes in the message centre menu.
The amber light will come on for information messages & will show red for more serious warnings.
When you have 50mls left the light will show amber & you get a chime, it then repeats at 25mls & 12mls.
Hope that helps

Well, I got all the way down to 0 miles left today! It never actually ran out though.

I have minimal chimes set, and I can say that at the following intervals the follwing occurs:

50 miles left: Petrol light comes on and orange warning light on left of dash
25 miles left: Orange light on the left of dash ilumintaes again
10 miles left: Audible alert goes off, Red warning light comes on on the left side of dash and remains on until you press the button on the left stalk to cancel it.

I think they under read the actual amount of petrol left in the tank quite a bit, to ensure that you don't run out and damage anything.

Also remember that top gear thing where Clarkson drove with a camera in the tank, it looked empty but ran on fumes for ages!
