do games that specify windows xp etc still play on computers with windows vista?
and will a game such as roller coaster tycoon 3 that needs at least: pentium 1000 mhz, 256 mb ram memory, 800 mb free space, 8x cd-rom speed, 64mb hardware video card, 16-bit sound card. work on this computer?
click
or can anyone recomend another computer, the budget is £350, the computer don't have to be spectacular but needs to play recent games like this one and can be suitable for college work. oh and i listen to music on windows media player quite alot. it also needs to include: keyboard, monitor, speakers, mouse, sound & graphics card, speakers (although these can be bought seperately, but the budget is still £350 in total)thanks

I'm really unsure on vista compatibility, I have heard people having problems with it, so I am holding off that upgrade for a while!

in terms of that pc specification which u have given a link for, it should manage to play the game (if it is compatible), but it seems a little low on ram, particularly with the demands vista will place on it, I would suggest you get at least 1 gig of ram, and although the hard drive is probably big enough, they are being a little stingey IMO! I would suggest taking a look on some competitor sites and especially some of the more heavily discounted sites such as ebuyer and misco.

Hope this helps!

I haven't had a look on the other sites I mentioned above recently, and I would suggest you do - they are often a lot cheaper, but I just had a quick look on dell and this pc might be what you're looking for and would probably be more suitable than the pc world one if you aren't comfortable buying from a less well known company. Interesting point on the vista issue.

Dell scrapped XP a few weeks back and were only shipping computers with vista. They had 11,000 complaints! So now they're shipping with the option of vista or XP until Jan 08.

Seems people don't want to switch yet simply because they have a perfectly good system running XP, they have all their software and games working on it so why switch to vista. It doesn't seem to offer any 'must have' features.... yet.

Personally I'm waiting till next year and a service pack or two before moving to vista.

i cant get on that ebuyer site, it keeps closing my internet down for some reason, so if anyone is bored and wants to help me. can someone maybe find me a computer off there? it needs all the above specification: including, graphics card, sound card, speakers, keyboard, mouse, monitor, prefereably windows xp as opposed to vista, a normal cd drive and a cd-rw one, or a combined one. and a budget of £350-£400, closer to £350 please!!

if the description only mentions that it has an optical drive which is a dvd burner, does that mean you can't burn cd's, just dvds??? also does this mean that its not a normal cd-rom player - therefore meaning you can't put games in to play etc? im comfused!

I've just had a look on ebuyer but they only have a few machines with windows xp and to be honest they are either not very good spec or too expensive, the closest match is this one (hope the link works!) LINK

Having said that, the dell one is reasonably good also and I am sure if you gave them a call they could probably change the operating system and maybe even upgrade something else to compensate for having XP? I am not sure on their pricing policy, whether its different over the phone or online but I haven't noticed anything to say its an "online only price", so give them a call and haggle on that system!

The ebuyer link is for the intel chip which some may prefer? it is £360 but if you use google checkout you can save yourself a tenner

I should have mentioned, on ebuyer they tend to sell the base and the monitor separately so that price I just gave is excluding a monitor, you'd need to add about £100 for a 19 inch monitor or about £80 for a 17 inch.

Its pretty similar situation to the other site I mentioned and you can browse pc's by the operating system they are loaded with; there are a few decent offers, so take a look there too - just don't forget the monitor if you need one! Link

All Dells ship with XP or vista as an option.

You might want to follow this thread on DigitalSpy. Someone else is after a laptop in the same price range.
