Ford have announced that they are to scrap the Fiesta Model as from 2008.

Article in the Daily Mail (17/05/2007):

..."Ford Fiesta to be phased out after more than 30 years as one of Britains favourite cars."

"The name, which has adorned seven generations of small Ford hatchbacks, is about to disappear as the company tries to attract more young male drivers."

It goes on..

"A new, sportier version is to be launched next year with alternative names including GENESIS, ISIS and PHOENIX."

So...wonder what we can expect next year from Ford, amybe this will keep the resale price boyant???

Depends what the replacement is though hey??? Personally, I do not like the new proposed new names - bit lame.

I also dont like the new shape of the concept model.

So I will either keep my be-loved Fiesta or get a Focus ST.

Be a bit sad considering they are so popular. Hopefully as has been said it will help the second hand market. They do need a sport model to slot into the middle of the range that the Fiesta ST touches on. The puma and cougar were never really upto the job. Not sure why the fiesta has to make way for it though, is the ka selling that well then?

Hmm, I think we'll have to wait and see before we know for certain as to whether or not the Fiesta name will be dropped. I've read a little bit about this the past few days, and everything else I've seen is that Ford are unsure about whether or not to keep the name - I think the Mail is jumping the gun a little there. It could well be that the name is changed, but we won't know for definite until the car is unveiled at the autumn motorshows.

As to the actual names that have been mentionned, I don't think it will be called Genesis since Hyundai are already planning on releasing a model called that. Phoenix, maybe, maybe not, since thats the name of a new engine range for Chrysler so could be legal isues there. Isis, perhaps more likely, even though it does sound similar to Iosis which IIRC was the codename for the new Mondeo.

In reality it could be anything yet at the moment, including Fiesta, so will just have to wait and see what happens.

well my understanding would be that the Fiesta ST is a popular car and if Ford stopped making them there would be more demand for second hand cars.

As we have found from people on this site, when it comes to selling a year old one, it is hard to command a good price, this is because they are readily available at heavily discounted prices brand new.

Take away this availability and they become harder to pick up. The Fiesta ST may not be as iconic as some other hot hatches from many years ago, but look at the prices on an Escort Cosworth, Nissan Pulsar's etc, these still cost a lot of cash for a relatively old car - reason? They're sought after and available in diminsihing numbers..

well that's my two pence worth

Long live the !

It may not be the case yet.
I have been hearing that Richard Parry-Jones is not happy about loosing the Fiesta name and Ford still remember quite vividly the trouble caused by calling the MKVI Cortina the Sierra. They also came very very close to calling the new Mondeo the Iosis and even the 2001 Mondeo the Cortina but changed their mind at the last minute.
I personally think that was a bad move, not using Iosis.
You also have to remember that the new head of Ford (Alan Mullaley) has made them change the name of the Ford 500 and it's equvilent Mercury version back to Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable from 2008.5 model year which will influence their decision.
Though saying that, no-one mourned the death of the Escort name and the Focus name has been fully accepted in all markets.
I'm not sure, maybe it is time for a change.
I've still got my money on IKON.
