Just to add to one of the arguments that they used in that article, namely that because some of the people the new one will be aimed at weren't born when the first Fiesta came out then they won't be bothered about a name change. Certainly the consensus amongst people on here falling into that category seem to disagree, and think it important to stay.

Besides, we weren't born when Coco Pops came out either, but as kids we still complained enough when they tried to change it to Choco Krispies that they changed it back!!

I can assure you it WON'T have 200 BHP.
They will want people to be able to insure it.

I think IKON ST sounds better than Pheonix ST or CUGA ST

Personally I don't think they'll change the name.

Agreed definitely. The 1.6 turbocharged engine to me indicates something a bit more powerful than present, say around 170bhp. This would be a good compromise between having it powerful enough that Ford aren't being left behind, and still being insurable as a mainstream model that would sell loads.

If they were to ever produce a Fiesta with 200bhp it would be on an RS only, but at the present time I can't see them doing that.

What has to remembered also is that rightly or wrongly - and in my opinion they got it wrong here - was that Ford felt not too long ago that something in the range 180-200bhp in the shape of the Fiesta RS wouldn't have sold enough to justify the expenditure. Whilst I disagreed with them on this and felt that there were many strong arguments in going ahead with the Fiesta RS, bearing that in mind there's no way that they would then produce a model that powerful that they're expecting to be mainstream.

yeah, you are more than likely right mate, im guessing its going to be a little slower than the Corsa VXR, and they'll concentrate on handling/styling to separate it.

tbh without a faster Ford like the Focus RS coming out, i'll probably move away from Ford when my deal runs out

yeah I think its a shame, their "sports" models really should be built to compete with the leaders, there's no problem insuring a 200bhp civic or clio so I don't see why they would think it would be "best" to tone it down for insurance purposes. They didn't worry so much with the cosworths! maybe that's what they should be doing, and for the Fiesta/Ikon or whatever it will be!

True, they did have the RS Cosworths in the past, but even then they were at the top end of the range, with the XR2/3/4s a little lower down with the XR models fulfilling the same sort of position as the STs do today, as a warm but not extreme car.

I do still think that there is room, and a market, for a more extreme version of Fords models, but as an RS version ie. in smaller numbers. This would also have a halo effect I think on the rest of the range. For example, had the Fiesta RS been developed on the timescale that was orginally suggested then it would have been ready to launch at around the same time as the facelift mk6 Fiesta - which would surely have had major marketing benefits to Ford.

The problem is that for some time now Ford have been somewhat reluctant to us the RS brand even though it must be the stongest sporting brand of a mainstream manufacturer. And it hasn't helped that on the two occasions in the last decade that they have, the Focus RS and Ford Racing Puma (which we all knew was a Puma RS in all but name), they lost a lot of money on both. Even though there were very specific reasons for this (nothing to do with the cars themselves which were/are awesome), they are now wary about doing the same again, and with the financial problems of the parent company will be reluctant of taking any risks.

I don't think it helps either that Ford are losing money hand over fist, and maybe they feel that they don't want to risk entering a car into the market for it lose them money. At the end of the day that is all they are trying to do - make money. And if a limited run of RS cars doesn't do that then they have no reason to release it.
As we all know from Ford's dealers and their customer service, what the consumer wants doesn't necessarily come into it.

I for one would love them to release an RS Fiesta. I think an RS Fiesta would fit into the market well as the Focus ST is pretty much up there with the likes of the Golf GTI however, Ford at the moment, don't have anything to rival such cars as the new Corsa VXR. Therefore, a Fiesta RS of the kind that they talked about would fit well into that area of the market. And like you say Chris, the RS is a very well known and reputable brand, and I'm sure that the people who have placed orders for the Corsa may well have chosen the Fiesta instead. I know I certainly would

You've got to look at it from a sales & marketing point of view.

If you think about it, the ST has now become what the RS used to be (almost), I know we have no Cosworth but compare the Fiesta ST to the Fiesta RS Turbo/1800 specs and you'll see.
Also the Focus ST to the Escort RS2000 16v and you'll see.

The Zetec-Ss have taken over from where the XRs used to be and the STs are almost where the RSs used to be, so if you release an RS it's going to affect the sales of one of the other models or not sell itself.

EG - If the Focus RS had been 285 BHP and front wheel drive 0-60 in 6.0 secs but with a price of £25,000 would anyone have really bought it when the Focus ST is so good for (realisticly) £17,000

If the Fiesta RS had 200BHP and a price of £16000 would you have really bought it when you can get an ST for £10500??

It's like the old MKII Escort, the 1600 Sport was very good and the RS2000 brilliant. The poor old MKII Mexico wasn't that much better than the Sport and nowhere near as good as the RS2000 hence it didn't sell and got dropped.

I think that's why Ford are reluctant to release an RS.

Ford of Europe aren't in that much trouble, they actually make a profit.

The last of the Mk5 and 6 Escort RS2000's were not the best driving cars and have less bhp and torque than the current Fiesta ST.

The RS Turbo versions had less power and didn't like corners too well. Even the RS Turbo and RS1800 Fiesta's were great in a straight line but you didn't want to push them too hard as they didn't like it. In addition to this, the Fiesta RS1800 has roughly the same bhp as the Turbo (132bhp) but less torque.

I love the driver feedback and grip this new ST gives compared to previous models and is a much better driver's car. The problem with the last of the RS's is that the style and image was dumbed down and never had the same effect or presence as the firs MK1 and 2 models, which were fab and more powerful.

The RS name has only started getting notoriety again due to the Focus RS, which is why they released them in small numbers.

The new Focus ST has performance, power and chassis grip equivalent to the Escort Cosworth and more rewarding than the Sierra Cosworths.

Also, you don't have the electric problems in the new Fiesta that the old Turbo's were plagued with.

Chris
