6 Month Oil Change...

I don't know why, but I've always had this thing about changing the oil and the filter every 6 months - Does anyone else do this?
There's obviously no harm in doing it (it probably does the car more good in the long run).
You know what they say - Oil is the lifeblood of your car, so I suppose it's nice to get a fresh supply once in a while.
Thoughts?

Hi chaps. Manufacturers have set these 12,000mile guildlines for a reason!
In the "olden days" yes it would be better to change the oil as regulary as you guys are talking about. This is due to the quality (or lack) of oil back then. However, these days there really isnt the need to be changing the oil as much as you are...its a complete waste of money!

The way I look at it is this - My oil needs topping up slightly and to buy a carton of the oil I like is around the £20 mark. I can pay my local Ford garage dead-on £30 and they'll change the oil for fresh stuff and put a new filter in for me too.

On a car petrol engine it makes no difference; stick to manufactures guidelines. It wont hurt it but you are wasting your money.
On an oilburner which uses the oil as both a lubricant and a coolant or a motorbike which does 13,000-15,000rpm, then yes, every 4000 miles or so is more advisable (after all its doing twice as many cycles as your ST in every 10,000 miles).
I think Citroen service interval is even higher - 18k in my mind?!?

Im not saying it will harm the engine, quite the opposite! But it really isnt necessary. Im a mechanic...I know what Im talking about! lol
Just a waste of money in my opinion.

No matter what the manufacturers say, 12000 miles is too long on a gallon of oil. As you use your engine you get contamination from burning the fuel and also unburnt fuel washes into the sump watering down the oil. Change it as often as you want, it'll do more good than harm. I often only change the oil not the filter half way through but it's up to you. Also get in the habit of vacuuming your airfilter every 3-4000 miles to keep it breathing nicley.

I've just had my K&N filter today, so I'm aiming to have that installed by the end of Thursday afternoon. Roooar!
