I was thinking of buying myself a cheap runaround to get to a fro from work to save on petrol and racking up the miiles on the Fez I may have to do some sums of my own, you have me thinking now...

I agree entirely with your logic there Scott, and as you know when I had my RS on order I was planning on keeping my ST as my everyday car for the exact same reason, namely that it would save me a lot of money compared to running the RS all the time.

You're right to keep both cars, even if it costing you money this month. Obviously purely from a financial point of view it would be silly to sell your silver Focus, and, hopefully sooner rather than later, you'll be working again meaning you'll be able to afford running the RS once more. If you were to sell it now then you don't know if you'd be able to find one in such original and good condition again as they are getting harder and harder to find.

It seems that the post i threw together with the figures has surprised a few of you.

I love both of the cars and as Chris said, selling Silkie would be financially pointless as she would only be worth 1.5-2k? To me, she is worth a lot more.

I'm sure something will come up sooner or later and ill be back in work again... for the time being all that can be done is to skimp every penny and pay things.

Running cars takes a massive chunk out of your wages, they do also give you a massive amount of pleasure, sometimes it can feel like you're working just to keep the car on the road.

The figures are a bit flawed at the moment because I imagine you will have cut right back on the mileage covered.

As I'm sure you already know getting a job is the key to which way you go with this, you can't run an RS for ever with no income, or pay someone else to do work on your car when you could do it yourself, just think of the saving you could have made on the brakes alone.

You could save a hefty lump by just having the car car insured fire and theft. The money you save on the insurance would get silky back on the road and running for a few months at least. That way you keep the as it is a great example you have got there. I know you won't be able to use it but there is plenty of time for that when you get back into work.

As you know i looked into doing this for my zs and getting a cheap run around. Insurance was £30 for the year and the car would have been stored at my nans.

I know it's not ideal but sacrifices have to be made in these situations. And things do turn around quickly. Compare where me and cas were 18 months ago to now

To answer some of the questions.

I haven't cut back on the milage as that is how much I do... wether in a job or not unfortunatley.

You are right Micky with the insurance bill if I took lightening off the road... but... if I did that then he would sit on the drive rusting away with the elements taking charge of all the bits, including wrecking the brake discs etc. Over all it would cost me more to replace bits that have failed or gone down hill due to not using the car.

Saying this though... Over the winter period I am planning on putting the into storage and this and obviously I can then put the insurace down to fire and theft until the spring returns. This way it keeps the car safe from elements and danger. The only problem with this is that it will cost £100 per month to do this... so... storage is no cheaper option in the long run, it's actually more expensive.

I won't be selling either car and will keep them both going... for the sake of £2000 extra i'll stick my neck out and with Sarah alone 100% supporting me at current and also agreeing we will keep them both.

It wouldn't help if you had a more powerful car and your as they would both cost you a lot of cash.

If you had a run around and a more powerful car then yes it probably would help.

What car are you thinking of getting?

I would be getting rid of the ST and getting a VX220/Elise or a car of that nature which would of course be alot to keep running
So whether I could run an old Focus/Golf as tyres, servicing etc on them cost an arm and a leg
