In fairness I agree. If you didn't have Silkie you could run the with that money from Silkie no problem!

obviously you love both cars but having two is burning a hole in your wallet!!! ...that's why I didn't buy a road legal buggy in the end this summer

I understand what you are all saying here by only keeping one car... but I am going to try and demonstrate that it wouldn't benefit me to sell Silkie and drive Lightening around as my only car... heres why:

Over a one year period I drive 20,000 miles... so let's work this out.

My insurance for each car is:

Silkie: £650 - 12k
Lightening: £996 - 8k

If I was to use lightening for 20k miles it would cost me in excess of £2k... in reversal it would cost me around 1k to insure Silkie... so therefor saving me £500 if I used Silkie or costing me an extra £500+ to use Lightening.

Tax:

Silkie: £175
Lightening: £210

Obviously I would save one or the other on this

MOT:

£45-50 on each car so obviously I would save this also.

Tyres:

Silkie: £200 for 4 tyres that last 20,000miles
Lightening: £400 for 4 tyres that last 20,000miles

The big one... petrol:

Silkie: An average of 35mpg = £2517.24 for 20,000miles
Lightening: An average of 19mpg = £5163.40 for 20,000miles on 97ron fuel rate (the only fuel I can put in it)

Currently it is costing me:

Silkie: An average of 35mpg = £1510.34 for 12,000miles
Lightening: An average of 19mpg = £2065.36 for 8,000miles on 97ron fuel rate

totalling only £1000 more than just driving Silkie around for the entire 20,000 miles but saving over £1500 then if I drove the around soely.

Ok... so much figures... so i'll add them all together in 3 seperate sums.

Over a 1 year period this is how much it costs me for:

Having both cars running: £5896 (say £6000)

Running just Silkie: £4020 (Say £4000)

Running just Lightening: £8118 (Say £8000)

- - - - - - - - - - - - - -

The results might well have suprised you all? I actually did my maths before I decided to keep two cars on the go and it really does make you think a little more.

You could well argue that I should get rid of my and save the £2000 per year and just drive Silkie around... well... yes... but isn't the very reason I made this site and have devoted so much of my time over the last 5 years because I love beautiful fast cars, such as the that is my pride and joy.

I worked out that an average smoker goes through £25 of fags per week which totals up to £1300... plus the alcohol that they may buy... this would amount to the extra £2000 that I pay in keeping both cars...

The puts a MASSIVE smile on my face and theres no way I would get rid of it unless I really had to, and Silkie is such a reliable car that I don't have to worry about parking everywhere or replacing expensive parts that it would be stupid to sell her.

You may have got seriously bored of this long brain killing post by now but if you haven't then hopefully i've gave you a little more to think about.

The question is... after reading this...

What would you do in my situation knowing what I do?

Good to see you done some serious sums there Scotty Makes sense to keep 2 cars you love AND manage to save money

I was thinking of buying myself a cheap runaround to get to a fro from work to save on petrol and racking up the miiles on the Fez I may have to do some sums of my own, you have me thinking now...

I agree entirely with your logic there Scott, and as you know when I had my RS on order I was planning on keeping my ST as my everyday car for the exact same reason, namely that it would save me a lot of money compared to running the RS all the time.

You're right to keep both cars, even if it costing you money this month. Obviously purely from a financial point of view it would be silly to sell your silver Focus, and, hopefully sooner rather than later, you'll be working again meaning you'll be able to afford running the RS once more. If you were to sell it now then you don't know if you'd be able to find one in such original and good condition again as they are getting harder and harder to find.

It seems that the post i threw together with the figures has surprised a few of you.

I love both of the cars and as Chris said, selling Silkie would be financially pointless as she would only be worth 1.5-2k? To me, she is worth a lot more.

I'm sure something will come up sooner or later and ill be back in work again... for the time being all that can be done is to skimp every penny and pay things.

Running cars takes a massive chunk out of your wages, they do also give you a massive amount of pleasure, sometimes it can feel like you're working just to keep the car on the road.

The figures are a bit flawed at the moment because I imagine you will have cut right back on the mileage covered.

As I'm sure you already know getting a job is the key to which way you go with this, you can't run an RS for ever with no income, or pay someone else to do work on your car when you could do it yourself, just think of the saving you could have made on the brakes alone.

Good luck in the job search, I wonder if the guys going to Bakewell will find the road you took down into Castleton past the cement plant, you know you want to show them

I will proberbly get shouted at for this but can you not put the off road for a short time?

You could save a hefty lump by just having the car car insured fire and theft. The money you save on the insurance would get silky back on the road and running for a few months at least. That way you keep the as it is a great example you have got there. I know you won't be able to use it but there is plenty of time for that when you get back into work.

As you know i looked into doing this for my zs and getting a cheap run around. Insurance was £30 for the year and the car would have been stored at my nans.

I know it's not ideal but sacrifices have to be made in these situations. And things do turn around quickly. Compare where me and cas were 18 months ago to now

To answer some of the questions.

I haven't cut back on the milage as that is how much I do... wether in a job or not unfortunatley.

You are right Micky with the insurance bill if I took lightening off the road... but... if I did that then he would sit on the drive rusting away with the elements taking charge of all the bits, including wrecking the brake discs etc. Over all it would cost me more to replace bits that have failed or gone down hill due to not using the car.

Saying this though... Over the winter period I am planning on putting the into storage and this and obviously I can then put the insurace down to fire and theft until the spring returns. This way it keeps the car safe from elements and danger. The only problem with this is that it will cost £100 per month to do this... so... storage is no cheaper option in the long run, it's actually more expensive.

I won't be selling either car and will keep them both going... for the sake of £2000 extra i'll stick my neck out and with Sarah alone 100% supporting me at current and also agreeing we will keep them both.

Sarah commented to me yesterday after seeing this thread and said that she would never let me sell either of them... don't you all wish you had a girlfriend like mine? I bet you do <--- for Sarah

It wouldn't help if you had a more powerful car and your as they would both cost you a lot of cash.

If you had a run around and a more powerful car then yes it probably would help.

What car are you thinking of getting?

I would be getting rid of the ST and getting a VX220/Elise or a car of that nature which would of course be alot to keep running
So whether I could run an old Focus/Golf as tyres, servicing etc on them cost an arm and a leg
