i agree, that it is something they could give you for free, as £20 is steep for a little input on the radio.
Regarding the volume, i do the same thing on my PC at work, it has a single line connector from my hard drive. I put the lead from the speakers into the headphone socket on my ipod and it works fine. so i dont think there should be any problem with volume.
As long as the Ipod is set at about 80% volume then the sound should play fine, as you can control the loudness through the radio volume. It would be the same priniciple as using the iTrip. the manual recommends you have the ipod volume at about 80% and using the stereo to control the loundess of the music.
Unfortnately i have just sold my old 3G ipod on Ebay as i bought a 4Gen 20Gb in Hawaii a month ago. (soon also to be sold on ebay due to bloody apple releasing the 30GB video ipod for the same price 6 weeks later! styill off to vegas in 2 weeks so i am gong to buy one then!) I gave my dock away with the ipod so i cant check it. oh well.
Does anyone else use an ipod in their car? how is it connected up. I use my itrip, which is fine where i live, but when i drive to work to london on a saturday, as soon as i hit the blackwall tunnel i cant use it anymore as there are so many pirate stations on air. pain!
