Got stuck in the smash at J27 on the M6 today, was stuck in horrible heat for about 30 minutes watching my engine temp rise to maximum triggering an engine warning light. Thankfully the people behind and three lanes across had left a massive gap, big enough for me to reverse a bit cross the lanes onto the hard shoulder and drive about 500 yards to Charnock Richard services. The engine temp went down but as soon as I started the car it shot back up triggering the warning again. After sitting for a further 20 minutes I decided to join the M6 again in the hope that gaining some momentum would help cool the engine, it did. After trawling a couple of miles at 10mph with the temp needle hovering just below maximum the traffic petered out and I managed to get up to 70 and bang the tempt dropped right back down to normal.

I've never had this before and not sure if it's just down to it being a hot day and sitting in traffic not helping or if it's done serious damage and to get it checked?

Lost any water in the header tank? my water pump went two weeks ago and the first thing I noticed was the temp was halfway and a little above almost within a few mins of starting the car then i checked the header tank and noticed it was almost empty and then obviously took it in.

Is the fan working? Check the water coolant level

Had the water pump replaced in January by the garage I bought it from, hasn't lost any coolant either. Not sure what to make of it as it was fine the other 50 miles of the journey, cooled down fine when I got home and warmed up ok when driving to football :S

Might just be because of the hot day. Slow moving traffivc so you couldn't shut off the engine? I normally do if its at a standsill

Does sound a bit odd. I'd take it too be looked at. If the fan didn't come on (you would know because it's flippin loud) could be a faulty thermostat or could be an issue with the new water pump. Andrew can tell you all about water pumps

It wasn't that hot today surely.............. sounds odd mate coz once the temp rises to a particular point the fan should be on doing the cooling that driving would normally do.

Get it looked at

My guess is that the fan isn't working because it cooled down when motoring giving air flow.

Easy check, start the car up on the drive with the bonnet up and wait.

Keep us informed.

Also if your ever in doubt and need to cool the engine, put your windows down and put the heating on max temp and max blow (4). It may be Uncomfy but takes the edge of the engine temp and saves it from cooking itself.

Ok... I had this problem about 4 weeks ago. The biggest cause of this issue is an air lock.

Go for a drive, warm your car up and then feel the pipe from your coolant reservoir to your radiator. You might well find that it is cooler towards the radiator.

Take the cap off your coolant reservoir and let the engine tick over. Squeeze the pipe and you might find air coming out from it. If it is an air lock, it might explode out your coolant reservoir like a volcano. This is perfectly normal.

See if your fan comes on. If it doesn't, check the fuse for your fan (this is a common fix)

If none of the above works: You will need to take a trip to the garage.

Cheers guys, I'll give this a try tonight Scotty as my local dealer closes half 5 and I'm not home till 6 at best most days. I'll go on Saturday if needs be. Hopefully won't be anything serious, if it is would anyone advise against getting this done at a non-Ford dealer? Just asking as my Auntie runs a garage so would probably only have to pay for parts if there was an issue!
