Dangerously high engine temps?

Got stuck in the smash at J27 on the M6 today, was stuck in horrible heat for about 30 minutes watching my engine temp rise to maximum triggering an engine warning light. Thankfully the people behind and three lanes across had left a massive gap, big enough for me to reverse a bit cross the lanes onto the hard shoulder and drive about 500 yards to Charnock Richard services. The engine temp went down but as soon as I started the car it shot back up triggering the warning again. After sitting for a further 20 minutes I decided to join the M6 again in the hope that gaining some momentum would help cool the engine, it did. After trawling a couple of miles at 10mph with the temp needle hovering just below maximum the traffic petered out and I managed to get up to 70 and bang the tempt dropped right back down to normal.
I've never had this before and not sure if it's just down to it being a hot day and sitting in traffic not helping or if it's done serious damage and to get it checked?

Is the fan working? Check the water coolant level

It wasn't that hot today surely.............. sounds odd mate coz once the temp rises to a particular point the fan should be on doing the cooling that driving would normally do. Get it looked at

Also if your ever in doubt and need to cool the engine, put your windows down and put the heating on max temp and max blow (4). It may be Uncomfy but takes the edge of the engine temp and saves it from cooking itself.
