Not a diesel?
I'm not an expert and hopefully some one will be along shortly, but if you overfill the engine oil won't it cause a higher pressure in the engine and potentially damage components? Guess it all depends by how much it's over filled by.
Another option if you don't have a tube unscrew the drain plug to let some oil out. May be interesting putting it back in though with oil coming out

To much oil can be as bad as to little, if its only just over the max mark dont worry to much, but if its well over drain some out, I have seen some cars not start because the owner has overfilled the engine with oil and locked the hydraulic followers up, (solid on st) and also a renault diesel that would not turn off and rev high cos it was running on the engine oil after it was turned off.

ok cheers for the help guys, will drive it and see what it's like
straight forward if the engine isn't in the car but it wont be easy when it's in your have to take the slam panel out and the bumper to get to it all without cocking it up.
Honestly mate i wouldn't worry too much about it, if your talking millimetres.

well it was pretty much the top of the disptick i.e. about 4mm above the max mark drove a 60 mile round trip today and it was fine though
Where is the drain plug? also as Micky said won't it be impossible/ VERY messy trying to put the plug back in with the oil flowing out?
Its gonna get messy

1:) Take the car for a drive until it reaches normal operating temperature 2:) Park the car on a flat surface and turn it off 3:) Wait 5 minutes for all the engine oil to drain back into the sump 4:) Then (and only then!) .. check the oil level You would be amazed at how many people do such a simple thing so wrong, ... they park on a slope, check the oil when the car is cold etc .. If it's only a little bit over the maximum mark and the car is running fine then leave it alone If it's a lot over the maximum mark just release the sump plug a touch and let some oil drain out a bit at a time before reaching the correct level.

http://www.fordfiestast.co.uk/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=347976&an=0&page=0#347976Burn - If it's only 4mm over the maximum mark, don't worry. Drive the car as normal and come next oil change, put it on the right mark. ANything over 1cm over the max then you would need to drain a little, but honestly, leavie it as is, it won't do any damage. P.s. When checking oil level (Not when your changing it), put car on a level surface and pull dipstick out. Clean, replace and THEN check level. Do NOT check when it is warm.

It can over pressurise the engine, which puts gaskets, pistons and seals under more load than usual.

5w30 oil is that thin that if you want an exact reading leave it tell cold, if you want a rough reading i.e. just checking how low it is. 10 minutes is fine

you must do it different in australia m8, over here its recommended to let the engine cool down first before checking the oil, or check it on a cold engine, as hot engine oil gives a false reading.
It's an age old debate just as old as the history of the motor car itself ... some say to only check the oil when it's cold .. and others say it must be at operating temperature.
Either way really isn't going to make that much difference, but the argument for checking whilst at operating temp is that the oil is at optimum condition while the car is in use and at operating temperature (ie: 99.9% of the time) and has thinned to it's correct state once it has reached this point.
How long is your car engine cold for? .. not very long at all, as such it is this if anything, that gives a false reading (although it's negligible either way) .. we are talking small amounts here.

Robjh - You are correct in what you say. It really doesn't matter, so long as the car is on a level surface and you allow it to settle, the reading will be pretty much the same.

Just changed the gearbox oil in my dads x350 Jag, oil at dealers was £29 a litre, gearbox holds 6 litres, had to check the oil at a temp of between 30 and 50 degrees, so i suppose it depends on what you want to do, I always check my engine oil when its cold maybe on a morning when it has drained back into the sump.

Tom, roughly, in mm, how much over the maximum is your oil level?
If it's over 5mm, I would get some drained. If it's only up to 5mm, it will be fine and no damage will occur.

I'll have a check, as I have no ramps I'd have to get it to a garage. Hopefully they wouldn't charge much to just drain a little oil?

It's a bit of an arse to drain as you need to drain a little, put the plug back in, check the level, drain abit more etc etc.
I'd say you'd be looking at about £15 or thereabouts.
Put two bricks in front of hte front tyres, drive on them and you'll get access to the plug easily. Undo the plug (13mm), undo it all the way BUT don't pull the plug from the hole, sort of hold a bit of pressure so that the oil dribbles out. Get a margerine container and drain into that.

Christ Tom, you did have too much oil lol. I have PM'd you, sorry it took a while, been doing a little overtime.
I would drain about half of what you have in that bucket again, and you should be okay then.
For everyone's info, to drain the g/box, you require a multi spline.

Lol, just glad to be off assitance. If you have any issues or whatever in the future, just give me a message and I'll answer you straight after work.
P.s. I would reccommend, if finances aren't to hard, maybe draining another litre and shoving a pot of slick 50 into the oil. Great stuff for performance cars, and really prolongs engine life.

I've torn a hole in a gear box from doing a wheel spin, high revs and flicked the clutch, made an almighty bang! Shitty french thing couldn't handle the excitement. Citroen AX I recall. I don't do this any more. It hurts the bank.

Where can I purchase myself some of this for a good price? I'm going to need to prolong my engine life after what I've done for it. Would I know if I'd damaged the engine by now? As I've been drivi9ng it with all that extra oil since the very start of September :/

I had a citroen Ax...For about a week. It didn't enjoy being on it's roof so that relationship was never going to work out.
Tom, if there was going to be damage, you'd know by now (The engine would rattle and bang). Go to a local motor factors, it should be around the £20 mark.

HELL YEH! I was wizzing through some old country lanes surrounded by wooding and next thing I knew a cow had launched free of the field it was imprisoned in and twated my car! I'd have swerved but there was oncoming traffic Glass went everywhere, my gf at the time got covered in glass and some minor injuries. 5 minutes later some kid hits the cow in road and flips his motor, it rolled about 3 times and I dragged him out, only a broken arm. At least his wasn't a moving target!

It wasn't a story, it's the TR..HOOF! My Corsa B SRi was a write off again so this time I just said flipping it, off you go to the scrap yard. The head unit I had in that is now in my Fez lol and I had the head unit in that Red AX as well. 8 yrs old. Farmers insurance payed up in the end. I think I ended up with a Renault 19 as the payout payed for the repairs of the previously roofed Corsa lol I've been so unlucky with cars FML!

Lol.
My first car was the AX, H reg also. Passed my test on Monday, got 3 points for speeding on the Wednesday, wrote the car off on Sunday. Bought an identical AX on the following Saturday, drove to Liverpool, mounted a curb and the strut tore away from the car, another write off.
So, bought a Pug 205, sold that, then a Pug 306, modded then got caught speeding (So that would be 6 points inside 2 years) but luckily for me, Pepipoo got me off that one and then I sold her. Got a Corsa 1.8 SRi, then a Focus TDCI, and now the ST. Nice clean license since the 3 points.
